The Importance Of Tummy Time And What It Means For Your Baby's Development

Hello and welcome to Squishy Tushy's first ever blog post!

Because we at Squishy Tushy care about babes and kiddies beyond comfy garments, cute dresses and unisex rompers, we will run a fortnightly series in collaboration with Dr. Chantel da Silva of Rise Chiropractic. Dr da Silva specialises in prenatal, postnatal and pediatric care and is based here in sunny Cape Town.

The first topic we cover is the all important tummy time for your baby, starting as early as the day baby gets home.

Moms & dads, tummy time is so super important for babas development and should be practiced daily for at least 5 to 10 minutes.

Dr Da Silva explains tummy time:

" ‘Tummy time’ is a cute name that describes exactly what it is, it’s time that baby spends on their tummy. Whether that’s on your chest, on the floor or in their cot, in a fully horizontal position or at more of an angle. Tummy time is the best way for your new born to build head, neck and shoulder strength, begin to interact and react to their environment and leads to greater physical and social development. Since the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) recommendation of Back to Sleep, spending time on the tummy is crucial for baby’s development."

So parents, get those babies on their tums!
